Easy to follow guide to measuring your windows and doors.

  • Measuring your windows can be harder than it looks when it comes to hurricane protection. That is why we insist on always measuring every job ourselves. That way, if there is a mistake, it is our mistake and we will rectify it. Remember, if you measure it…you own it! So let the professionals do it right the first time.
  • If you are interested in a quote, you can take the measurements yourself. They will be good enough to get an idea of price and availability. Once the quote is approved, we will come out and take the final measurements.
  • Here are a few little helpful tips that will make measuring easier for you and understandable for us.
  • Only use a measuring tape. Rulers, yardsticks and cloth tapes won’t give you an accurate measurement.
  • Always list the width first and the height second. For example, the window was 36″ wide x 72″ long. That is the standard way to express the dimensions. Not 72″ x 36″.
  • Don’t measure to the 32nd of an inch. For estimating purposes, you can get as accurate as 1/8 of an inch. That is more than sufficient for a quote.
  • Measure from the Outside. Measuring an opening from casing to casing is important when we are quoting a price.
  • Give your measurements in inches, not a combination of feet and inches. For example, if you had an opening that measured 42″ wide x 81″ long that would be the proper way to relay the measurements. 1’6″ x 6’9″ is correct but it makes it much easier to get the measurements in total inches. All standard measuring tapes are set up to give you that information without having to do any calculations yourself.
  • If you don’t have a measuring tape or your windows are too hard for you to measure, call us. We will be happy to come out and measure them for you.
